Returning to Europe following his mother’s funeral in September 1913, Harry went for a swim — twice — in Nuremberg, Germany. The setting for his shackled jump was Dutzend Lake, which is where, in another two decades, the Nazis would hold their monstrous rallies at the Reichsparteitaggelände and begin building an immense Congress Hall. It would have been the biggest meeting venue in the world except that, you know, they lost the war. The horseshoe-shaped Meistersingerhalle remains unfinished (it’s now used for storage, though there’s also a museum about the Fuhrer’s plans), but tourists are encouraged to go there anyway.

Anyway, focus on the little pier jutting into the lake at lower left, and imagine Harry Houdini taking a dive.
